The history of Carovigno is rooted in the mystery of the most ancient civilizations of Puglia. Long before churches and castles were built, the Messapi lived here a proud and warlike people who constructed massive stone walls to defend their settlements. The remains of these megalithic fortifications, still visible in the surrounding countryside, testify that the area was inhabited many centuries before Roman rule.

Over the centuries, Carovigno followed the fate of much of Puglia: it was crossed by Romans, Byzantines, Lombards, and Normans, each of whom left a mark a stone, a word, a legacy.

It was during the Norman period that the town began to take on the shape we still recognize today: a fortified core protected by towers and walls, with the castle overlooking the valley and the coast.

At the heart of the town stands Castello Dentice di Frasso, the symbol of the city and guardian of its memory. Built between the 14th and 15th centuries, probably on earlier medieval structures, the castle was expanded and transformed over the centuries until it became a noble residence. The Dentice di Frasso family, a noble Neapolitan lineage, made it their residence in the 19th century, giving it the elegant appearance we know today: triangular and circular towers, inner courtyards, and terraces overlooking the sea.

Around the castle, the town grew and prospered thanks to the fertility of the land and its proximity to the sea.

During the Middle Ages and the modern era, Carovigno was a strategic link between the inland areas and the coast. Its coastal towers such as Torre Guaceto, Torre Santa Sabina, and Torre Pozzelle formed a lookout system against Saracen and pirate raids that threatened the Adriatic.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the town gradually transformed from an agricultural center into a destination for holidays and cultural tourism.

Today, walking through its narrow streets or watching the sunset from the castle, it is easy to sense this layering of eras: every stone tells a different story, every corner preserves an echo of the past.

Carovigno is therefore a living synthesis of Apulian history: a land that has endured wars and dominations without ever losing its identity, transforming its ancient stone into a symbol of strength and timeless beauty.
